Currently the Design Team Lead for the managed in-house agency at Chevron, I am an award-winning journalist with more than 20 years of experience. I offer a experience that includes content creation and editing, information and product design, user experience, change management, crisis management, staff management and training.

 

EXPERIENCE / LEADERSHIP / SKILLS

Media Design & Management

PRINT DESIGN: Created award-winning logo/brand design, newspaper and magazine design for the Austin American-Statesman and the Lexington Herald-Leader. Used agile method and design thinking to create iterations and functional prototypes

DIGITAL DESIGN: Produced wireframes and consulted on products for Cox Media Group.

BOOK DESIGN: Served as art director, designer and editor for the 24th and 25th editions of the Society for News Design’s annual book.

MANAGEMENT: Managed local teams (up to 25 people) and remote teams (more than 25 per location) in deadline design for publications. This included hiring full-time positions, cultivating freelance positions, evaluations and coaching.

CONTENT CREATION/EDITING: Award-winning designer and photojournalist. Written and edited content for print and digital audiences. Well-versed in Associated Press style, copy editing and SEO practices. Managed social media accounts.

COMPETITION JUDGE: Served as a judge for the Society for News Design’s international competition in 2015.

Product development

REDESIGN/PRODUCT LAUNCHES: Oversaw and implemented award-winning redesigns and product relaunches of print and digital products at Cox Media Group, the Austin American-Statesman and the Lexington Herald-Leader. Each iteration was prefaced with market research, an analysis of efficiencies and keeping the customer at the forefront from proof of concept to prototype to launch.

Project management

BUDGET: Led multi-department team to analyze inefficiencies and reduce production costs for Cox Media Group.

CHANGE MANAGEMENT: Led restructuring of staff resources after the transition of the Statesman’s business model. Oversaw transition of printing operations from Austin to Houston and San Antonio. Managed transition team in centralizing editing and design functions for Cox Media Group.

COVERAGE: Orchestrated coverage across multiple departments and platforms at the Statesman and the Lexington Herald-Leader.

SYSTEMS: Developed and led multi-department teams to install content management systems for Cox Media Group and Knight Ridder.

Event planning

JOURNALISM EDUCATION ASSOCIATION: Booked speakers, set schedules, developed collateral and worked with host hotels for national conventions of more than 5,000 attendees.

Public speaking and corporate training

LECTURER/CONVENTION SPEAKER: Led and developed workshops about media design, photojournalism, diversity in coverage and hiring practices, management and ethics at conventions for the Society for News Design, College Media Advisers, Journalism Education Association, Texas Associated Press Managing Editors and others including the University of Texas, Kansas State University, Texas State University and Austin Community College.

CORPORATE TRAINER: Oversaw training for 500+ people on design and content management systems for Cox Media Group and Knight Ridder.
